Common questions about Acana
Who owns Acana?
Mars Petcare, since 2022. Acana and sister brand Orijen were both owned by Champion Petfoods (a Canadian-headquartered company) until Mars acquired Champion in late 2022. Both brands continue to operate under the Champion Petfoods operational umbrella within Mars. The ownership change is relevant disclosure — Acana is now under the same corporate parent as Royal Canin, IAMS, Pedigree, and Nom Nom.
Is Acana linked to DCM?
Yes, Acana was among the brands cited in FDA DCM investigation reports 2018–2022. The "Regionals" sub-line was most frequently referenced — high in peas, lentils, and chickpeas, which together formed the pulse-cluster pattern the investigation tracked. Acana has since introduced the "Wholesome Grains" grain-inclusive line in part to address the concern. FDA has not established causation; investigation remains open.
What's the difference between Acana and Orijen?
Orijen is the top-tier biologically-appropriate line — 80-90% animal ingredients, typically 1/3 fresh or raw. Acana is positioned slightly below with ~60-70% animal ingredients. Both are made at Champion Petfoods' DogStar Kitchens (now Mars-owned) in Alberta, Canada and Kentucky, USA. Orijen is pricier; Acana is more widely stocked. Nutritionally they're similar; differentiation is primarily meat-inclusion percentage.
