Common questions about Hill's Pet Nutrition
Is Hill's Science Diet different from Prescription Diet?
Yes — two distinct product tiers. Science Diet is sold through consumer retail (Petco, PetSmart, grocery). Prescription Diet is the veterinary-authorised line, including the allergy-targeted z/d (hydrolysed protein) and d/d (novel protein) formulas. Both are made by Hill's Pet Nutrition but sold through different channels with different formulation standards. A dog can eat Science Diet without vet authorisation; Prescription Diet requires it.
Has Hill's been recalled recently?
Yes — January 2019, expanded March 2019. Hill's Pet Nutrition voluntarily recalled 33 lots of canned dog food spanning the Prescription Diet and Science Diet lines after identifying vitamin D levels that could cause hypervitaminosis D. The FDA received reports of kidney injury and related illness. Recall affected canned dog food only, not dry products. Full FDA enforcement-report URL on the brand page.
Is Hill's WSAVA-aligned?
Yes. Hill's is one of the few US pet-food brands that meets WSAVA (World Small Animal Veterinary Association) manufacturer-selection criteria — which require DACVN (Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Nutrition) on staff, AAFCO feeding trials (not just formulation), and published peer-reviewed nutrition research. Royal Canin, Purina Pro Plan Veterinary, and Hill's are the three primary WSAVA-compliant brands in the US.
