What we track
The scope of the Scanner's underlying data. Every number below is derived from the curated corpus — not marketing copy. Sources: AAFCO ingredient definitions, FDA pet-food guidance and enforcement archive, manufacturer disclosures, and peer-reviewed veterinary nutrition literature.

Allergens currently tracked
Barley, Beef, Chicken, Corn, Dairy, Egg, Fish, Lamb, Oats, Pea Protein, Pork, Rice, Soy, Wheat.
Scanner cross-matches each against ingredient aliases (e.g. poultry by-product meal → chicken bucket). The full allergen directory covers prevalence, hidden label names, and cross-reactivity for each.
Dataset growth
- Ingredients — 15 entries today, expanding to 50+ in the next curation pass (proteins, grains, legumes, preservatives, additives).
- Brands — 10 US brands today, expanding to 50+. Each includes FDA recall history with enforcement-report citations.
- Hypoallergenic Food Finder — 47 curated products. Inclusion criteria and refresh cadence documented on the methodology page.
- Symptom hubs — 10 diagnostic guides. Expand with missing presentations as they emerge.
Methodology in brief
- Every ingredient entry cites its AAFCO definition or FDA classification.
- Every brand entry documents the AAFCO feeding method (feeding trials vs formulated to meet) and pulls recalls directly from the FDA enforcement archive.
- Prevalence statistics on allergen pages cite Mueller et al. (BMC Vet Research 2016) meta-analysis of 297 dogs or equivalent peer-reviewed sources.
- No “best” or “worst” rankings — each entry is factual reference only.
- Star ratings are not rendered on product pages because we have no verifiable source for them. Sort order uses internal editorial ranking until that changes.
