How much fish oil should I give my dog?
The standard therapeutic dose is ~20 mg combined EPA + DHA per pound of body weight per day. A 25-lb dog needs ~500 mg daily; a 75-lb dog ~1,500 mg. Check the supplement label for EPA + DHA content per serving, not the total "fish oil" quantity — a 1,000 mg capsule might deliver only 300 mg of EPA + DHA. Start at lower doses and build up over 2 weeks.
Is fish oil safe for fish-allergic dogs?
Usually. The allergenic protein fraction (parvalbumin) is largely absent from extracted fish oil, so most fish-allergic dogs tolerate fish oil without reaction. A small subset does react to trace proteins. Introduce at a low dose and watch for any recurrence of itch, GI upset, or ear symptoms for 2–3 weeks before scaling up to full therapeutic dosing.
Does it matter which species the fish oil comes from?
More for sustainability than for the dog's health. Menhaden fish oil is cheapest and most common in pet supplements. Salmon oil is premium but sustainability-questionable depending on source. Anchovy / sardine oil has the best omega-3 concentration per volume. Third-party testing for mercury, PCBs, and oxidation matters far more than source species — rancid fish oil reverses its anti-inflammatory benefit.
