Source

Farmed Atlantic or wild-caught Pacific salmon — pet food typically uses trim and parts not destined for human sushi-grade market.

Regulatory status

Considered under AAFCO fish definitions; specific-species labelling is preferred over generic "fish".

Key notes

  • Cross-reactivity with other fish species is high — parvalbumin proteins are shared across most fish, so salmon-allergic dogs typically also react to tuna, whitefish, and herring (~70-80% cross-reactivity).
  • Salmon oil extracted from the same fish retains less of the protein that triggers allergy, so it is sometimes tolerated by fish-allergic dogs — but not reliably.

Classified as a fish allergen source in the scanner's cross-match. If your pet reacts to fish, this ingredient is also a trigger.

Common questions

Is salmon hypoallergenic for dogs?

Sometimes used for novel-protein diets, but not reliable. Fish allergies affect ~5–7% of food-allergic dogs, and cross-reactivity between fish species is unusually high (~70–80% via shared parvalbumin protein). A dog that has eaten salmon regularly may be sensitised; and a dog allergic to salmon typically reacts to tuna, whitefish, herring, and most other fish. Fish as a category is not automatically hypoallergenic.

Why are salmon-based diets so popular for skin issues?

Salmon provides EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids, which are well-documented to reduce skin inflammation and improve coat quality. Many dogs with itchy skin do improve on salmon-based formulas — but the improvement often comes from the omega-3 content, not from salmon being hypoallergenic. Adding fish oil to a different protein base can achieve the same skin benefit.
